After a long year of disappointing games, I was afraid High on Life would join that list again. But the amazing actor Justin Roiland and his amazing team Squanch Games managed to deliver a comedy experience that will stick in my mind for a long time, and I intend to return it many times. High on Life can only be described as an absolutely insane experience from start to finish, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves Rick and Morty or dark comedies.

There is no story crazier than High on Life!
The events of the game start on the planet Earth where we play a hero who represents all of us. This hero is sitting at his computer enjoying the experience of a shooting game, then he goes downstairs to find a message from his parents saying, "We always support you, but you should do something more useful than sitting in front of your computer all day trying games." I think this sentence has been addressed to all of us gamers at some point in our lives!

Suddenly and without warning, we find that the planet Earth is being taken over by the G3 space gang, and suddenly the hero finds a talking weapon that tells him that the space army is going to occupy the planet, and that we must escape from here as soon as possible. We move on to find ourselves in an alien city, and the hero is transformed from an ordinary person into a bloodthirsty bounty hunter.

It seems the hero's shooting games have paid off in the end as he must now eliminate all of the G3 leadership in order to reach and kill the Supreme Commander to prevent the aliens from taking over the planet Earth. It's a crazy, entertaining story full of hilarious moments that literally feel like they're straight out of the world of Rick and Morty.

You can finish the game's story within about 7-8 hours, but to see everything in this crazy world, you will need about 15 hours, especially since each area you visit in the story events branches out into some side areas that you can return to later after finding the necessary items.

High on Life is primarily a shooter. You will spend the first stage with the gun Kenny (who can be considered the protagonist of the game, represented by Justin Roiland). Then you will get Gus's gun, Knifey and other cool weapons. Each of these weapons speaks to you and comments on all your actions in the game, whether positive or negative, and every comment is a joke. Most of the time, these jokes are great, but sometimes they're boring, silly, and basically not funny. But some jokes made me stop the game from laughing, especially porn jokes that many players will not understand.

All of these weapons are unlocked as you progress through the game. At each stage you will get a new weapon or item, which adds a lot of fun to the progression. The weapon's basic strike eliminates alien enemies, and the special strike enables you to quickly kill enemies or solve various puzzles in the environments.

At the beginning of the game you will feel that your movement is simple and all you can do is run and jump. But as you progress through events, you'll get a jetpack that lets you fly, a boot that lets you climb walls, and a new addition to your bounty hunter suit that lets you quickly dodge enemy strikes.

Unfortunately, the game has some noticeable repetition in the design of stages and enemies. In each stage you will encounter a group of enemies, then you will solve a group of puzzles, you will get a new weapon or tool, and in the end you will face a leader from the G3 space gang. This is repeated approximately five times in the game, with different levels of play. The boss fight itself is great and each boss has a different gameplay that will challenge the quick wit of all players.

Despite the repetitive design of the enemies, the game was still a very enjoyable experience, especially since each stage in the story stages becomes more difficult than the previous one. At the end of the game, you will feel that you are playing a stage of the game DOOM Eternal, where the last stages make use of all the skills that you learned during your journey in the world in a more wonderful way.

Graphics and sounds
The most beautiful cartoon design you've seen in 2022
As always, Unreal Engine 4 shines in cartoon games. Squanch Games studio has built a space world with lots of unique areas. Each stage of the story has its own distinctive graphic character, which enables you to easily distinguish it from the previous stage. Believe me when I tell you that some moments in the game will leave you amazed with its graphic beauty!

Add to that the distinct character design, and even though there was some repetition in enemy design, it was still pretty cool. The studio took its full time designing the bosses in particular, as each boss has a different graphical look. The same applies to the talking weapons that the player has. Each weapon has a distinct color and design language that stands out most clearly with the voice acting.

The voice acting takes 10/10 without any argument!
Without a doubt, the best thing about High on Life is the voice acting. Each of the weapons you own has its own character and distinctive style, and the weapon I liked the most is Kenny, especially since the actor is Justin Roiland himself, who introduced us to Rick and Morty previously. Gus' weapon was also great, played by JB Smoove, and there are a lot of other great actors out there.

Perhaps the actors and their jokes are what made the High on Life experience so fun, as it would have been an ordinary cartoon shooting experience without those wonderful talents that worked to present the story in such a distinctive and sarcastic way.

Technical performance suffers from some problems
I tried High on Life on a medium PC platform with the following specifications:
Intel Core i3 10100F processor
16 GB of DDR4 RAM at 2666 MHz
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card
I was able to run the game on high graphics and the performance was not stable. Some stages have frames reaching 100-120 frames per second, and other stages witness a sharp drop in frames to 50 and 60. The game released an update on the first day that solved some of the problems that I encountered, but the game still needs more updates.

In addition, the game has a set of technical errors that made me need to return to the previous save area so that I can complete it as required, but this matter did not affect the general experience, and I continued to enjoy my time, especially since the game saves a lot automatically.

in the end
High on Life gave me a great satirical experience with a crazy story and fun gameplay that gets more difficult as you progress through the game. Did the game deserve the hype it was? You definitely deserved it. Squanch Games studio remains the number 1 in providing these black comedy experiences, and I advise everyone to plunge into this satirical world at the earliest opportunity.
