The Xenomorph has haunted sci-fi fans' dreams since its famous debut in Ridley Scott's Alien. Despite the success of the daredevil creature on the silver screen, its video game adaptations have been less consistent. For example, Colonial Marines' grueling shooting mechanics and bug-ridden environments made for a lackluster experience, Aliens: Fireteam Elite tries, and often fails, to establish itself in the middle. Environments - Dimly lit corridors and deserted caves, but the AI is uninspiring. And repetitive task design hurts in the end.

You can create an avatar, pick your favorite class, assemble an alien-killing loadout, and go alongside players (or bots when playing solo) to take down some Xenomorph menaces. Fireteam Elite's unremarkable plot takes place over four consecutive campaigns. Unsurprisingly, the evil Weyland-Yutani conglomerate reverted to their nefarious antics, sacrificing the lives of innocent humans for unethical alien research. Your task force is sent to the outer colonies to deal with the fallout. Unfortunately, there are no exciting twists or turns. If you're a fan of the series, you've come across the illegal — wrong — trope more times than you want to remember.

In each gunfight, various Xenomorphs or rogue synthesizers fill the screen, climbing over each other - from grouchy face-editers and tool-wielding "worker Joes" up to 7 feet tall, to heavy infantry pretorians. Sergeant Herrera, the aggressive voice in your ear, oversees your progress through each campaign, but his guidance and overall level design for each mission, never change. Sure, you can traverse the stunning remains of the ancient humanoid civilization of Prometheus (a nice break from the lackluster storage bays and metal objects of the first mission). However, your requests remain to advance at a point of interest, activate a controller or place a scanner, and weave through incoming swarms while navigating the linear maps. Rinse and repeat. Placing fortifications like sentinel towers and mines helps mitigate redundancy, but Fireteam Elite has no intention of surprising its players or experimenting with the typical cover-shooting mechanics.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite review
Your Marine character is disappointingly lacking, and character customization is a cosmetic sign. Fortunately, the classes add an important strategic element to the action. Each class comes equipped with two abilities and weapon specializations that can alter the flow of combat. In addition, you can switch between different roles during mission preparation. Doc's "Shock Station" heals the entire group in a small radius and works like a charm in narrow corridors while Demolisher's array of heavy weapons, like the "Smart Shotgun" and flamethrower, deliver heavy punishment and come in handy when things get dicey. I enjoyed upgrading my favorite classes to unlock rare perks like extended ability spells, which came in handy when choosing harder difficulties.

Managing abilities and securing different angles while watching teammates emerge created moments of intense tension. Too bad those moments are few and far between. While the enemies come from many different directions, every gunfight plays out the same. This is indicative of Fireteam Elite's biggest problem: monotony.

After reaching a checkpoint, you can return to your base of operations - an empty hangar, save for a few forgotten NPCs, and purchase new weapons, attachments, perks, consumables (such as elemental bullets), and other equipment. You can also purchase challenge cards that make missions more difficult for the added benefit of accumulating greater wealth. As I neared the end of the campaign, I appreciated those challenge cards and used the money to buy better mods and perks to meet the higher Combat Rating requirement for the final attack. On the one hand, it also meant that I took the time to play through previously beaten sections. And with no discrepancies in the gameplay, this gets old quickly. There is no avoiding this extra play. You'll have to backtrack more than once to complete the entire campaign since experience points and money don't grow on trees.

Weekly objectives called "Tactical Opportunities" consume some additional coins for completing various tasks such as managing a specific class or eliminating enemies with certain types of weapons. However, the return is not worth re-tasking. Furthermore, once the campaign is over, Horde mode is finally unlocked, which is – you guessed it! Reuses local locations and mission objectives that you've cycled through a few times.

Unfortunately, there isn't enough interesting or entertaining content to parse, and the hit-and-run becomes tedious. Developer Cold Iron Studios has promised a year of post-launch content, but unless substantial changes are made to the episode, you'd better ditch this messy infection.
